slow and steady

Various projects around the house are inching along. This morning, we put up a wire fence around the garden to keep out the pests...err, adorable pets. The short sides are permanent but we attached the longer sides so that I can take them off when I need to plant, weed, or harvest (here's hoping). I've planted lots of seeds but so far nothing has sprouted. In a week or so I will buy some seedlings and plant those instead. Although Drew and I both hate raw tomatoes (gross!), we decided to plant one tomato plant so that we can make homemade enchilada sauce (mmmmm). I think I'll plant some flowers in the little plastic pots in front of the garden.

If the garden works out this summer and actually provides us with some delicious produce, we plan to build at least one, maybe two, identical beds next summer. I'm drunk with the possibilities! One bed for squash, one bed for root vegetables, one bed for leafy greens... we'll be able to supply all of our friends with fresh, local, organic (?) produce. I'm hoping we can grow organic, but we'll have to wait and see what kind of disease and/or pest problems come along.

Also, please take note of that lush green grass. It may never look that good again. We live in a dessert and aren't big fans of watering the lawn. At least it looks great every spring!

The bathroom is going to end up taking about twice as long as expected (which was one week). But after talking to our neighbors, who hired a contractor to remodel their (exact same) bathroom and ended up spending $12K...we figure the extra time is worth the savings. The final cost of ours will be much closer to $2K than $12K...

I think the random pattern is turning out quite nicely. We hired a friend-of-a-friend to install the shower tiles and Drew is helping and deciding the pattern. I'm still trying to stay out of the way.

Finally, the lilac bushes around our house are in bloom! Unfortunately, these bushes are ancient and have seen better days. They haven't been properly maintained and now are mostly twisty trunks/branches with blooms only at the very top. They still produce some beautiful and fragrant blooms, though!

Happy Mother's Day!

Oooh everything is looking so great, Kara!! I love the bathroom pattern!

We used to have lilac bushes next to our house in Hillsboro until our neighbors cut them down. It was so sad! I loved putting them in vases around our place.
