another (simple) culinary adventure
I was traveling through Eastern Europe during the summer of 2004, and trying to eat vegetarian meals whenever possible. (I was vegetarian at the time, but didn't want to miss out on cultural experiences such as when my travel buddy's father's war-time friend bought us a beef platter in Sarajevo.) When I arrived in Serbia, I went out to get some food with a few other kids from the hostel. We found an open restaurant and sat down. The only non-meat item on the menu was rice with tomato sauce and an egg. There was another vegetarian in the group, and we decided to go for it even though it sounded a little strange.
It was. So. Good. Five years later, I can still remember how satisfying it was. (Likely influenced by the fact that I had been eating mostly street food for the week prior.) Funnily enough, I've never tried to make it at home, though...until today. It is so simple! I used leftover rice, jarred marinara sauce, and fried an egg in olive oil until the yolk was just starting to set. Piece of cake...and just as yummy as at the restaurant in Belgrade.
